Have Equipment or Staff-Training Deficiencies Been Identified? Don’t Wait for the Next Survey.
Healthcare facilities work hard every day to provide safe, quality care. But sometimes equipment-related gaps can develop quietly.
A patient lift may be available, but has every staff member been properly trained on its use?
A specialty bed or pressure-management surface may have been appropriate when it was originally selected, but does it still meet the resident’s changing needs?
Preventive maintenance may have been performed, but can the documentation be quickly located?
Training may have occurred, but is there a record showing who was trained and when?
These may seem like small operational details—until there is an incident, a complaint, a staff injury, or a survey.
That is why equipment readiness should be an ongoing process, not something addressed only when a problem occurs.
Equipment Readiness Goes Beyond Having the Right Equipment
Having equipment in the building is only the beginning.
Facilities also need to consider how equipment is being used, whether staff understand its operation, whether preventive maintenance and inspections are documented, and whether the equipment continues to meet the needs of the people using it.
This is especially important with equipment such as patient lifts and transfer devices, specialty beds, pressure-management support surfaces, wheelchairs, mobility equipment, and seating and positioning systems.
The CDC reports that 1 in 4 adults age 65 and older reports falling each year, while CDC/NIOSH identifies patient handling as a major risk factor for work-related musculoskeletal disorders among healthcare workers. Proper equipment and staff education therefore affect both resident safety and caregiver safety.
From Identifying a Gap to Taking Action
When an equipment or training deficiency is identified, the goal shouldn't simply be to “fix the problem.”
Facilities have an opportunity to determine why the gap occurred and how to prevent it from becoming a recurring issue.
At CFS, our Facility Equipment Compliance & Readiness approach focuses on five areas:
Identify → Assess → Educate → Document → Strengthen
We help organizations identify equipment and training gaps, assess equipment condition and use, educate staff and leadership, document training and recommendations, and strengthen ongoing equipment readiness.
A Question Every Facility Leader Should Ask
If someone walked into your facility tomorrow and asked:
“Can you show me that your staff has been trained on this equipment, that it is being properly maintained, and that it remains appropriate for the resident using it?”
How quickly could your team answer?
If the answer is “We would need to look for it,” that may be the perfect place to start.
CFS Medical Supplies & Equipment and CFS Solutions DBS work with healthcare organizations to identify and address equipment-related gaps involving staff education, equipment use, preventive maintenance, and documentation—before they become recurring survey or resident-safety concerns.
Identify the gap. Educate the staff. Document the training. Strengthen readiness.
