What Is a Certified Durable Medical Equipment Specialist (CDME)?
A Certified Durable Medical Equipment Specialist (CDME) is a nationally recognized credential awarded by the Board of Certification/Accreditation (BOC) to professionals who demonstrate advanced knowledge in medical equipment, patient education, and regulatory compliance.
CDMEs are trained to:
Assess patient needs and recommend appropriate equipment
Educate families and caregivers on proper equipment use and safety
Navigate insurance requirements, documentation, and compliance standards
Support healthcare providers and facilities with expert product and policy guidance
To earn certification, candidates must complete at least 500 hours of work experience in a DME or HME setting and pass a two-hour, 100-question national exam evaluating product knowledge, patient interaction, and compliance expertise.
