The Invisible Backbone of Healthcare: Family Caregivers

In a recent article, Diane M. Carbo, RN, beautifully highlighted something many of us witness every day in healthcare — the critical role family caregivers play behind the scenes.

Diane is a nationally recognized caregiver advocate and the founder of Caregiver Relief, a trusted resource dedicated to supporting family caregivers through education, advocacy, and practical guidance. Her Caregiver Relief Podcast is consistently recognized among the Top 10 caregiver podcasts, helping families feel seen, informed, and supported as they navigate complex care journeys.

Behind nearly every patient is someone quietly carrying an enormous responsibility: the family caregiver.

Across the country, millions of spouses, children, and loved ones coordinate appointments, manage medical equipment, assist with daily care, and make important healthcare decisions at home. Caregiving is an act of love, but today it often requires navigating complex healthcare systems without formal training or support.

Many caregivers become what experts call the “invisible second patient,” experiencing stress, exhaustion, and emotional strain while focusing entirely on their loved one’s needs.

As more care shifts into the home, caregivers must be recognized as essential members of the care team. When families receive education, guidance, and proper resources early, outcomes improve — not only for patients, but for caregivers themselves.

At CFS Medical Supplies & Equipment, we see every day how preparation and education help families move from crisis decisions to confident care at home.

This post was inspired by Diane’s important work advocating for caregivers and raising awareness about the essential role they play in healthcare.
